Nollie’s Skate Contest in loving memory of Alec Chambers
Imagine you are in front of 500 plus people, live punk music blaring behind you, all the homies cheering as you air over a car and set up what you are going to do on the quarter pipe. Alec’s painted face is staring you down, seeing what you’re going to pull off. Guys are going for broke. I see as many slams as I do makes, and I have never been more thankful in my 24 years on this planet to have been born and raised in Carolina Beach.
YULE doom metal band
A celebration of skateboarding, music and tacos, Nollie’s, our local taco joint in Carolina Beach, puts this street style skate contest on every year. The day was beautiful, beers were flowing, music was jamming, the weather was perfect, and the boys were throwing down. The Nollie’s Skate Comp is an event you don’t want to miss, and I’m sorry if you did. Being a spectator and also photographing the event made me realize how much I appreciate growing up in this beach town. Carolina Beach is small. Everyone knows everyone, and the surf is pretty shit but does get good every once in a while. The skate park is also fun especially since they added on to it few years back.

You may be wondering who Alec is since his face is painted on the perfectly made 8 foot quarter pipe. His name is Alec Chambers, and he recently passed in a tragic car accident where a drunk woman hit him while he was trying to stop her from drunk driving out of our local watering hole. FUCKED UP yes it is! We all miss you Alec. This day was for you.
To see everyone in this community come together for a whole day to celebrate the love of skateboarding and music was truly a pleasure.
AL forever!
Words from Eben Guenthner
“You don’t get many chances to skate over a car. This event brought friends from all over North Carolina to celebrate the life of AL it was beautiful to see everyone come together.”

Words from Griffin Faulkner.
‘‘I actually didn’t really enter the competition. I really don’t like contest. But I do enjoy skating with friends and getting fired up to try something that might be scary. It was also a lot to deal with since it was in honor of our dear friend Alec chambers. All I have to say is this contest really brings back to old school parking lot style demos that everyone loves and really gets everyone more stoked then just a normal competition. Thanks to EJ & Nollies Tacos for putting this together.’’
Words from Curren
“The weekend was rad. Good to get everyone together and fired up for AL. Ramps stayed sturdy, the bands ruled all day long, plenty of human death box’s. Can’t ask for much more, thank you to everyone for making this happen!”
